“It starts with the inspiration, then a sketch and finally realistic visualisations. Working this way ensures I can work everything out before entering the workshop. It makes sure the details and construction can be perfected with no compromise once started. For commissions, I can show the client exactly what they will be commissioning and what design changes will look like once built.”

Commissioning & Process

Step 1 - Inspiration

“Choosing which building or vernacular detail to celebrate next is a tough choice. Travelling around and exploring is the perfect way to find inspiration. Collecting lots of pictures and embracing the feeling of the building is important for which details to represent.”

Step 2 - Sketching

“Taking on the inspiration, the objects are sketched out on paper. It’s the best way for me to allow the ideas to flow and work them into the furniture and boxes. It allows for imagination to happen far easier than going straight to CAD or simply trying to make something in the workshop. Sketching also allows me to be portable and sketch on demand when ideas happen.”

Step 3 - CAD Models

“My previous experience of working in car design helps immensely here. Taking the sketches and interpreting them into well proportioned and detailed models. Efficient changes can be made, tweaks to the proportions and details added. Producing fully detailed CAD models gives me the confidence that everything will work together and fit once we get to the making stage.”

Step 4 - Rendering

“An essential stage is visualising the objects with the correct materials and lighting. It is incredibly useful to be able to see the design finished before it has even been started. Not just for me, but to show clients and galleries. It takes the guess work out of colours and materials. Rendering also allows for new materials and colours to be experimented with without having to commit.”

Step 5 - The Making

“The making stage is where it all finally comes alive. Timber and materials are locally sourced and the CAD model comes into its own. It gives me the templates and exact measurements to create what was designed and rendered in the previous stages.”

Step 6 - Completion

“Once completed the object will be delivered via a white glove service for larger items or special delivery for smaller items. Or it may make its way to an exhibition throughout the country to be shown to the public and professionals.”
